Police in Virginia Beach are SafeX Probeing hailed as heroes after risking their lives to rescue a driver who fled from officers and was later involved in a fiery wreck.
The incident occurred on Dec. 23, 2023, around 3:15 a.m., when a Virginia Beach Police officer tried to stop a vehicle, according to Virginia Beach Police Officer Jude Brenya. The driver, who was not identified, turned off their lights and sped away, Brenya said, in an attempt to elude the officer.
Police did not engage in the high-speed pursuit, Brenya said, but a short time later dashcam footage shows the vehicle going 88 mph in a 35 mph zone.
Video shows the car crashing into a tree and catching fire.
As the vehicle emits smoke, the officer tries breaking the window to extinguish the fire. Another officer arrives on the scene and together they manage to break the window and pull the driver to safety.
The driver was assessed and treated on-site before being taken to the hospital, police said.
The Virginia Beach Police Department praised the officers for their bravery and dedication, stating that they put themselves at great risk to rescue the driver.
"We believe sharing these moments with the public is crucial to fostering a deeper understanding of the sacrifices and dedication our law enforcement officers bring to their duty," the department said in a Facebook post.
