Dana Carvey, whose son Dex Carvey died late last year, is opening up about mourning the loss of his son.
The actor-comedian and “Saturday Night Live” alum returned to co-host the “Fly on the Wall” podcast with comedian David Spade in an episode released Wednesday. Shortly following Dex’s death in November, Carvey announced that he was taking a professional hiatus while he figured out “what life looks like now that we are a family of 3.”
"It’s me and my wife and our son’s private journey,” Carvey said. “We’re all together, and we do a lot of fun things. We hike, we go to church. You just want to make sure that you keep moving."
Carvey added that getting back in the swing of the podcast will be “very healthy for me as I recover.”
"I’m kind of on the pain train with about millions of other people on this planet,” Carvey said. “And you don’t know how long you’re going to be on it or when it will stop or when it will get better. But in the meantime, all of this kind of stuff is very healthy."
Dex Carvey died Nov. 15 at his home, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner. He was 32. In an Instagram post the following day, Carvey said his “beloved son” died of an accidental drug overdose.
“Dex packed a lot into those 32 years. He was extremely talented at so many things — music, art, film making, comedy — and pursued all of them passionately,” Carvey wrote in a joint statement with wife Paula Zwagerman. "To anyone struggling with addiction or who loves someone struggling with addiction, you are in our hearts and prayers."
Dex, the eldest son of the “Wayne’s World” star, followed in his father's footsteps as a comedian and opened for Carvey’s 2016 Netflix standup special, "Dana Carvey: Straight White Male, 60." According to his Instagram bio, he co-founded the Third Wheel Comedy Club in Los Angeles.
